Kurt Grosschopff and his crew landed their Dornier Wal flying boat close-by.

Mario Stoppani’s flight back to Italy was cut short due to engine problems. After a failed return, the plane crashed into the sea and caught fire. 3  crew members and the passenger did not survive. Mario Stoppani was the sole survivor.
